2006 Victoria Cross Piedfort 50p Silver Proof 2 Coin Set Box Coa

In 2006 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Victoria Cross, the Royal Mint released a special Limited Issue Victoria Cross Piedfort 50p Fifty Pence Silver Proof 2 Coin Set struck in solid .925 Sterling Silver.

The collection contains an example of four of the United Kingdom Silver Proof Piedfort Coins issued in 2005.
This magnificent collection comprises the Victoria Cross Award and Heroic Acts which commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Victoria Cross.
The obverse of both coins carry Ian Rank Broadley's portrait of the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.

Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks.
As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces.
In Britain the practise of striking piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known.
