In 2006, the Royal Mint struck a special Limited Issue Britannia £2 Two Pound Silver Proof 5 Coin Set with all the designs up to 2006 and each has been selectively gold plated by the Royal Mint.

The image of Britannia is one of the most potent and immediately recognisable symbols of Britain. When the Britannia bullion coin was issued in 1987, she was the obvious choice to feature on its reverse.
There have been five different designs to date, all created by Philip Nathan. Whilst retaining Britannia's traditional features - a shield, helmet and sprig of laurel - Nathan's treatment of Britannia is fresh & lively and the modern Britannia designs show a bold figure dressed in flowing robes with her hair streaming in the sea breeze.
The first design shows Britannia proud and defiant, as she stands guard on the shoreline. She is holding a trident and an olive sprig and is at once both the warrior and the peacemaker.
To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Britannia coins in 1997, a second design was created. This time a majestic Britannia stands proud and bold in her chariot as, with echoes of Neptune, she is drawn along the seashore by two horses.
The British character of Britannia is accentuated in Nathan's third creation and she is depicted with a lion walking alongside her. The design calls to mind the elegant 'Una and the Lion' £5 Five Pound piece of 1839. This rare coin shows the standing figure of a youthful Victoria guiding the British Lion and has long been recognised for its outstanding beauty and simple charm.

The fourth design shows Britannia's head, over which is superimposed a wave pattern, emphasising Britannia's nautical associations.
In 2005, Nathan chose to show Britannia sitting on a rock and looking out to sea with her robes looking blowing in the wind. In front of her is an oak bush. She is holding a shield in her right hand and clasps a trident in her left.
The obverse design is Ian Rank Broadley's elegant portrait of the Queen.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
