In 2004, to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the first Steam Locomotive by George Stephenson, the Royal Mint, in conjunction with Westminster released a special Limited Issue £25 Twenty Five Pound Gold Proof Coin and £5 Five Pound Banknote Set.

George Stephenson's 'Rocket' sparked a worldwide revolution when it steamed ahead of its rivals at the Rainhill Trails during October 1829, reaching speeds of up to 30 mph.
Winning the competition established Stephenson's company as the foremost builder of railway locomotives in England, earning them the contract for the very first express train service on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830.

It celebrates their awe aspriring achievements exactly 200 years after the first steam engine, with the spectacular Stephenson's Rocket Gold Coin and Banknote Cover.
The cover beautifully incorporates striking Royal Mail 1980 Stephenson's Rocket Stamp Strip, depicting 'Rocket' passing through landscapes along the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The stamps are postmarked on the exact 200th Anniversary of the first journey by a steam locomotive - 21st February 2004 at Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil.

This superb cover also displays the exciting 2004 Royal Mint £25 Twenty Five Pound Gold Proof Coin, struck in 22 Carat Gold to a Proof finish.
