Early coin issues included denominations such as 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 tambala, introduced at the time of currency reform, with additional higher-value coins such as 50 tambala and 1 kwacha added later as the system developed.

Malawian coins typically feature national symbols such as the coat of arms of Malawi, which includes a lion and leopard supporting a shield, along with the rising sun and motto “Unity and Freedom.” These designs reflect national identity following independence and the country’s emphasis on unity and agricultural development.

Over time, inflation has reduced the everyday use of lower-denomination coins, and Malawi has periodically updated its currency system. In recent years, the Reserve Bank of Malawi has even moved to introduce higher-denomination coins (such as 20 and 50 kwacha coins) to replace heavily used banknotes and improve durability of circulation currency.

Modern Malawi coinage also includes commemorative and collector-focused issues, although the country is more widely known in numismatic circles for its circulating series rather than large-scale bullion-style releases. Coins from different periods may vary in metal composition, including copper-plated steel, nickel-plated steel, and brass-plated alloys.
