In 2004 to celebrate Famous Bridges of the UK and the Forth Railway Bridge, the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Forth Railway Bridge £1 One Pound Gold Proof Coin struck in solid 22 Carat Gold.

Designed by Edwina Ellis, the new £1 One Pound Gold Proof Coin for 2004 pays homage to Scotland and features one of Scotland's most famous landmarks, the magnificent Forth Rail Bridge.

The bridge was the invention of John Fowler and Benjamin Baker and is a cantilever design composed of three portions.
A marvel of Victorian engineering, the bridge was the biggest man-made construction of its time. Its nearly exclusive use of steel, combined with its latticework appearance makes it oddly reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower.
The obverse features Ian Rank Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
