1994 - 1997 United Kingdom Piedfort £1 Silver Proof 4 Coin Set Box Coa

In 1997 the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Piedfort £1 One Pound Silver Proof 4 Coin Set to represent the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom.

Commencing in 1994 with a coin for Scotland, the series continued with coins representing Wales and Northern Ireland and culminated in 1997 with a coin for England.
The obverse of all the coins have the splendid portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.

Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks.
As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces.
In Britain the practise of striking piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known.
