In 1980 for the first time ever the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue solid 22 Carat Gold Proof Sovereign 4 Coin Set and includes the £5 Five Pound Piece, £2 Two Pound Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign, and Half Sovereign Coins.
Each of the 22 Carat Gold Proof Sovereigns feature the legendary St George and the Dragon reverse designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, together with the portrait of Her Majesty, The Queen by Arnold Machin on the obverse. These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
